Performing Arts opportunities for everyone

By Katie Rickson

One big thing that lockdown has reinforced is how art is essential to our wellbeing. For us and our kids, it helps keep us sane, creative, connected and gives us the space and freedom to express a range of emotions and experiences in a safe and healthy way.

Despite recent challenges and restrictions, performing arts providers throughout New Zealand continue to create the spark for creativity that lasts a lifetime and generates pathways to success in the creative arts industry – through performance or production.

Enrolmy, a Software as a Service that empowers activity providers to fulfill their potential through magical automated processes and robust, seamless technology, is proud to work behind the scenes with several New Zealand performing arts providers including TAPAC, Marrzipan Drama, Tim Bray Theatre Company and Rata Studios. In this month's blog, we shine a spotlight on Tim Bray Theatre Company in Auckland and Rata Studios in Wellington.

Rata Studios - Wellington

Rata Studios’ beautiful home, in Scots College grounds, Wellington was built over eight years ago. Complete with its own state-of-the-art equipment, Scots College wanted to share this treasure with the wider community in 2013.

For over seven years, Rata Studios has been igniting creative futures for people of all ages and backgrounds through the love of music, performance, creative tech, visual arts and acting for the stage and screen. Their point of difference is their brilliant connections with industry professionals - their tutors and course facilitators include jazz greats, successful actors, filmmakers, and professional voice coaches. Their rich connection with the industry means many students succeed in being cast in films and stage productions and go on to work in the film and music industry, both in front of the camera, and in production roles.

Rata Studios values creativity, adventure, equality and diversity, and igniting creative potential through a variety of mediums. In the future, they plan to introduce an adult’s Jazz band, offer more classes online (as a direct result of Covid-19) and continue running more block courses for adults.

For providers who are admin avoiders

Jackie, the proud manager of Rata Studios, admits she hates admin and was looking for software that would minimise that aspect of her role and further improve the enrolment experience for Rata Studios participants.

So, in term two of 2019, Jackie took the leap and decided to give EnrolMy a go. She introduced the software in stages and moved her drama classes on there first.

The aspects of business that Enrolmy has helped Rata Studios with the most are managing enrolments and checking payments. She also mentioned the creation of course contacts lists are helpful, as previously she had to manually create group lists. Now, when people book, a contact list is automatically populated.

As Rata Studios courses are so popular, it’s also been helpful to use Enrolmy to put caps on their enrolments. Through their course directory, it’s clear for customers to see how many places are available. Once bookings are made, invoices are automatically generated and Jackie can receive payments whenever and wherever she likes.

Tim Bray Theatre Company

When you see Tim and his team talk about the power of children’s theatre to change lives, their passion is undeniable. Tim and his team of tutors provide a safe, fun and exciting space for kids from all backgrounds and abilities to be part of a tribe. A tribe centred on confidence building and creativity, through learning skills like puppetry and improvisation, to having the opportunity to watch professional theatre through their Gift a Seat™ programme.

Tim Bray, QSM started the company in 1991 and it has undergone a few name changes before it became Tim Bray Theatre Company. The Charitable Trust was established in 1993 to foster and promote live theatre and educate children and adults in the craft of drama and stage.

Their team of tutors offer weekly drama classes and their immensely popular Hit the Stage! - a five-day holiday escape for children and teenagers which ends with a devised performance. Kids learn vital creating thinking skills and build the confidence and ability to audition and participate in the company’s professional productions.

Too often, the joy of live theatre can be inaccessible to children. Tim Bray Theatre Company’s Gift a Seat™ initiative allows corporates and individuals to sponsor a child’s seat, so the ticket cost is no longer a barrier to experience and engage with the magic of a professional theatre production. Gift a Seat™ also supports scholarships to their Youth Theatre programme.

Performing Arts and COVID-19

Like many organisations in the arts community, Tim Bray Theatre Company and Rata Studios were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. During levels three and four, classes couldn’t be held in their usual format and live shows were cancelled indefinitely or delayed.

But the show must go on! They got creative and completed Term One via Zoom and plan to continue making this online learning option available.

And Tim Bray Theatre Company has launched an appeal as a registered charitable trust. They’ve lost a significant chunk of revenue due to cancelling their 100th production, Greedy Cat by Joy Cowley, which was about to go on a seven-week Auckland tour when lockdown occurred. We encourage you to get behind this vibrant theatre company and consider donating to the Tim Bray Theatre Company Crisis Appeal here.

One thing for sure is families across the country have really missed their activities, programmes and live performances. And now, as restrictions are slowly lifting and we are returning to a new normal, our children can’t wait to be reunited with their performing arts tribe.
