School Holiday Activity Planning & Ideas for Winter!

By Mihi Church

I have collated a list of fun and interactive, Winter-based activities that you can prepare for the upcoming school holidays!

Lego Masters: The Aladdin Build

The Australian Lego Masters series will inspire any adult or child to get creative.

See last seasons highlights below!

A Lego Master's build would be a fantastic holiday programme activity for this Winter. Kids will be happily occupied indoors and using their imagination for hours!

What you will need

  • Tonnes of Lego!
  • Space

  1. Come up with an exciting narrative to set the stage for the kids Lego Master build! My example would be based on the recent Aladdin movie!

Aladdin Narrative Exemplar.
While Aladdin and Princess Jasmine were out with magic carpet on their evening date (eeeww)... Genie was imagining what the fantastical kingdom of Ababwa would look like if Aladdin was a REAL Prince. Genie wants YOUR creative help building the beautiful city of Ababwa!

  1. Set a timeframe for the build to run - All day or 2-3 hours.

  2. Kids can either team up or build their own fantastical cities of Ababwa!

Rugby World Cup Merch!

The Rugby World Cup is coming up this year and what better way to prepare the kids, then start them creating their own rugby world cup merchandise!

What you will need

  • Blank t-shirts in different colours. You can bulk order these in advance from online stores like Kmart or The Warehouse.

  • OR you could create team flags/signs rather then t-shirts by sourcing a few metres of sale fabric from Spotlight.

  • Bulk order all sorts of fabric paint colours.

  1. Set up a space inside where kids can get messy with paints.
  2. Lay out the different t-shirt colours or flag/sign-size fabrics (they could represent different country teams or a child can just select their favourite colour)
  3. Have kids in their 'messy' gear, with covered shoes and hair tied up! And also ready to get dreaming!
  4. Let the kids go wild on creating their dream supporter shirt/flag/sign for their favourite country or team! They could write supportive messages, team icons, mascots, logo's, flag's or what they love about the country!

Now the kids are ready for the Rugby World Cup!

Cookie Cakes

Cookie cakes have been trending all over Youtube. I think it would be an awesome afternoon baking activity for your school holiday programme! The cookies can be personalised to the letter of the child name, and there's lots of decorating that can go on! Goups of kids could be happily creating their own cookie cake!

Watch the full tutorial on how to bake a cookie cake below!

What you will need

  • Number of students in your programme x (12cmx8xm) squares of baking paper for the letter or number stencil. Just a side note: kids don't need to create cookie cakes larger then their hand. To maintain a good sized cookie cake. Pre-cut about 50 12cmx8cm squares out of baking paper.

Georgia's Recipie for Cookie Cakes.
450g plain flour
300g butter
150g caster sugar
Optional: 1 lemon zest / vanilla
500g icing sugar
150g butter
60ml milk

  • Piping bags or you can create your own piping bags. Watch this tutorial.
  • Cooking facilities to bake cookies.

  1. Earlier in the day, give out the baking paper squares as an arts and craft moment. Kids can stencil their letter or number that they want to create for their cookie cake.
  2. Watch Georgia's video above for the instructions on how to create the biscuit dough.
  3. Roll out the dough and cut into squares for kids to cut their own stenciled letter or number.
  4. Bake the stenciled cookie cakes and set aside to cool.
  5. In the afternoon set up a cookie cake making stall with icing and decorations. Kids can come and create their cookie cakes!

There you have it! That's just a few holiday programme activity ideas that you can pre-plan for the upcoming school holidays! Leave some comments below with some of your own ideas!
